Candles have been around for many centuries. The earliest surviving candles originated in China around 200 BC. The early candles were made from whale fat. Early European candles were formed using fat, tallow and wax.
Candles are blocks of wax formed around wicks of string or cord which will burn continuously as long as there is wax vapor formed when the heat of the flame melts providing fuel to the flame. Materials for making wax vary from petroleum oil refined into paraffin was to beeswax which is a byproduct of honey.
Before electric lighting, candles were used in homes and buildings for illumination. Candles are popular decorative household items often displayed in candle holders, chandeliers and candle stands used for religious ceremony.
